Taxdoo Alternative for Shopify: What You Actually Need

Updated 2026-07-03

If you are searching for a Taxdoo alternative, it is usually for one of two reasons: the price no longer fits the size of your store, or the feature set is far bigger than what you actually need. This guide is not a takedown. Taxdoo solves a real problem, and for a segment of merchants that class of service remains the right choice. We build Faktwise, and you should know that while you read. Which is why the most important statement comes first: Faktwise is not a Taxdoo replacement. The honest answer to your search does not depend on the tool. It depends on how your store sells.

One note on scope: this guide is written for English-speaking founders and teams behind a German-registered Shopify store. Your admin may run in English, but your VAT registration is German, and your OSS return, if you file one, goes through the German authorities. That is the case this comparison covers.

The short version

What Taxdoo is and what it costs in 2026

Taxdoo pulls transaction data from marketplaces, shops, and payment providers, applies the right VAT rates, and turns the result into filings and financial accounting, including a DATEV connection (DATEV is the accounting standard German tax firms work with). The core of the offer is everything that goes beyond your own shop: registrations and ongoing filings in other EU countries, stock movements between countries, and the consolidation of multiple channels.

As of July 2026, the pricing page lists three packages: Basic Go from 49 EUR, Comfort Pro from 149 EUR, and Premium Max from 399 EUR per month on monthly billing. Those are starting prices that rise with sales channels, integrations, and transaction volume. The line item “data for the OSS return” is, per the package overview, included in the price only with Premium Max; in Basic Go and Comfort Pro it can be booked as a paid add-on. The pricing page shows no free plan.

Two more things Shopify merchants should know. First: the listing at apps.shopify.com/taxdoo currently shows a notice that the app is not available in the Shopify App Store, and the Taxdoo GmbH partner page in the App Store lists no apps. A star rating and reviews are accordingly no longer visible there. Second: you can still use Taxdoo with Shopify. Its own integration page describes an API connection through which Taxdoo pulls the Shopify data directly and also provides files for OSS returns. So you do not install an app in your store; you connect the store from inside the Taxdoo dashboard.

The deciding question: where does your stock sit, and where do you sell?

Whether you need a service of this class is decided by your business model, not by a price comparison. There are two clearly different cases.

Case 1: Shopify only, shipping from Germany

Your store runs on Shopify, your goods sit in Germany, and your cross-border sales go to consumers in other EU countries. Then your entire “international tax world” consists of two tasks: the right VAT on the invoice, and once a quarter the OSS return. The OSS scheme (One-Stop-Shop) is the central filing of those sales through the BZSt, instead of registering in every country individually. Up to an EU-wide threshold of 10,000 EUR in sales per year you can generally even keep charging German VAT. We cover the basics in our guide to EU OSS VAT for Shopify merchants.

For exactly this case, a compliance service from 49 EUR per month is often more tool than the task calls for. Faktwise is an e-invoicing app for 19 EUR per month (free up to 5 invoices per month, 14-day trial) whose main job is automatic invoices, ZUGFeRD, XRechnung, credit notes, and the GoBD archive. The OSS part is included: once you activate it in the settings, the app applies the destination country’s standard VAT rate to B2C sales into other EU countries, sums up each quarter’s sales by country and rate, and produces two files. A summary CSV for your records, and a BOP CSV that matches the published rules of the BOP import format (#v2.0), which you import into your OSS return in the BZSt-Online-Portal instead of typing the amounts in by hand; always review the figures in the portal before you submit. The walkthrough is in our guide to the OSS report and BOP CSV export, and if you want a sanity check before uploading, our free OSS check inspects the file for format errors.

So that no false expectations arise, here are the limits in plain terms: Faktwise does not register you for OSS, does not file any return for you, does not monitor the 10,000 EUR threshold, calculates with standard rates only (no reduced rates, for example for books), and sees exclusively your Shopify orders. It is not a stripped-down Taxdoo. It is a different category: the lighter path for the simple case.

Case 2: Foreign warehouses, Amazon FBA, multiple channels

As soon as your goods are stored in another EU country, for example with Amazon FBA’s CEE or Pan-EU program, local registration and filing obligations arise there that the OSS scheme does not cover. The same applies if you sell through marketplaces alongside Shopify and need to merge the data streams. Let us say it plainly: an invoicing app is the wrong tool for that. You need a Taxdoo-class service or a tax firm specialized in exactly this.

Besides Taxdoo there are other providers in this class, listed neutrally for orientation:

Which provider fits depends on your countries, channels, and volumes. Compare the offers with your (German) tax advisor, also with a view to whether your product range is taxed at reduced rates in destination countries.

Frequently asked questions

Is Faktwise a Taxdoo replacement?

No. Taxdoo is a compliance service with foreign registrations, filings, and an accounting connection across many channels. Faktwise is an e-invoicing app for Shopify that, as one part of its job, produces the quarterly OSS report and the BOP import file. If your case is the simple one (Shopify only, goods in Germany), that can be enough. If not, Faktwise does not replace Taxdoo.

Taxdoo is no longer in the Shopify App Store. Can I still use it?

Yes. Installing through the App Store is not possible as of July 2026, but Taxdoo connects Shopify through its own API integration from within the platform. Whether and when the store listing comes back is not something we can judge.

Do I need the OSS scheme at all?

Check first, then decide: up to 10,000 EUR of cross-border B2C sales per year (EU-wide, all countries combined) you can generally keep working with German VAT. Above that, the destination country’s tax applies, and OSS is the most convenient way to file. Whether and when you register is something to settle with your (German) tax advisor.

What does the OSS return cost me in the cheapest case?

Submitting in the BZSt-Online-Portal itself costs nothing. The real work is the clean compilation of your sales per country and VAT rate. With Faktwise that is baked into the 19 EUR app (report plus import file); with services like hellotax or countX the return is a service of its own from about 89 to 99 EUR per month, but they also handle the submission for you.

Faktwise is built for the simple case: automatic invoices and e-invoices from your Shopify orders, credit notes, GoBD archiving, and every quarter the OSS report with the BOP import file, all for a flat 19 EUR per month. Try the demo or install Faktwise from the Shopify App Store, free up to 5 invoices per month. Faktwise is software, not tax advice. Whether OSS is the right route for you and what applies in special cases is decided by the law and your (German) tax advisor.
