Sufio Alternative for Shopify: Faktwise vs Sufio Compared (2026)
Sufio is one of the most established invoicing apps on the Shopify App Store: launched in 2013, rated 4.9 stars across 439 reviews, and a polished product by any measure. So why would anyone look for an alternative? Usually for one of three reasons: the pricing ladder, the way credit notes are gated, or German e-invoicing requirements that go beyond what Sufio covers. This comparison lays out the facts on both sides so you can decide which app fits your store. We build Faktwise, so read this knowing where we stand. But every claim about Sufio below comes from its public listing and documentation, and we’ll tell you plainly where Sufio is the better choice.
The short version
- Sufio is a mature, beautifully designed invoicing app with strong template customization, Peppol delivery, and ZUGFeRD/Factur-X support. It is priced in volume tiers from $7 to $129/month, with credit notes available only from the $49 plan.
- Faktwise is a Germany-first EU compliance app: ZUGFeRD 2.4 and direct XRechnung 3.0.2 generation, Leitweg-ID capture, GoBD archiving, OSS reports and automatic credit notes. Free up to 5 invoices/month, then a flat €19/month unlimited.
Pricing: tiers vs flat
Sufio prices by invoice volume:
| Plan | Price | Included invoices |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $7/mo | 15 |
| Growth | $19/mo | 50 |
| Professional | $49/mo | 5,000 |
| Enterprise | $129/mo | unlimited |
There is no free tier; you get a 14-day trial. The step that draws the most criticism from users is not the entry price. It’s that a store doing, say, 80 invoices a month outgrows the $19 plan and lands on $49, and that unlimited volume costs $129/month.
Faktwise has two levels: free up to 5 invoices per month (genuinely free, for very small or starting stores) and €19/month flat for unlimited invoices, with a 14-day trial. There are no volume tiers to outgrow: 50 invoices or 5,000 invoices cost the same.
If your store sends a handful of invoices a month and you want Sufio’s template polish, Sufio’s $7 Starter is fair value. If your volume is growing or already high, the math diverges quickly.
Credit notes: the $49 question
This is the single most cited pain point among Sufio users: credit notes are only available on the $49+ plans. Merchants on Starter or Growth who need to document a refund correctly face a jump from $19 to $49. In users’ words, “a 3x more expensive plan for one setting.”
That gating matters more in Germany than elsewhere. Under GoBD principles, you don’t delete or edit an issued invoice. Refunds and cancellations are documented with credit notes. For a German merchant, credit notes aren’t a premium feature; they’re how compliant bookkeeping works.
In Faktwise, credit notes are automatic and included at every level: when you refund an order in Shopify, the corresponding credit note is generated without any action on your part, in the same format as the original invoice.
German e-invoicing: ZUGFeRD, XRechnung, Leitweg-ID
Both apps speak ZUGFeRD, with differences in the details:
- Sufio generates ZUGFeRD (version 2.3, EN 16931 profile, automatically for German customers) and Factur-X. That covers the core German B2B e-invoicing requirement.
- Faktwise generates ZUGFeRD 2.4/Factur-X (the spec in force since January 2026) and validates every file against Mustangproject and veraPDF before it goes out.
The bigger gap is public-sector invoicing. Sufio does not generate XRechnung directly. Its route to structured delivery is the Peppol network. German authorities, however, expect XRechnung with a Leitweg-ID (the buyer routing reference, field BT-10), and their portals validate against the official KoSIT rules. Faktwise generates XRechnung 3.0.2 natively, captures the Leitweg-ID at checkout, and validates every invoice against the KoSIT validator. If you sell to German schools, municipalities or agencies, this is the deciding feature; if you never invoice the public sector, it may not matter to you.
On VAT IDs: Sufio validates EU VAT numbers, but users report gaps in validation before the order is placed. Faktwise captures and validates the VAT ID at checkout via the EU’s VIES service, so B2B invoices are correct from the start rather than fixed afterwards.
Archiving, OSS and the accountant workflow
- Archiving: German merchants must retain invoices unchanged for 8 years (Faktwise archives for 10) under GoBD principles. Sufio does not advertise a compliance archive. Faktwise includes a GoBD-compliant 10-year archive, EU-hosted in Paris.
- OSS: Sufio offers partial OSS support in the form of VAT number validation. Faktwise produces quarterly OSS reports aggregated by destination country and rate, ready for your (or your accountant’s) OSS filing.
- Exports: Faktwise provides ZIP/CSV exports designed for handing a complete period to your accountant.
Where Sufio is genuinely strong
A fair comparison cuts both ways. Reasons to choose Sufio:
- Track record and polish. Thirteen years on the App Store, 439 reviews at 4.9 stars. The product is mature and the design of its invoice templates is widely praised. If pixel-perfect branded invoices are a priority, Sufio is excellent at it.
- Peppol delivery. Sufio is connected to the Peppol network. If your customers ask you to deliver invoices via Peppol today, Sufio has that route built in.
- Multilingual breadth. Sufio supports invoicing in English, German and French and serves merchants well beyond the German compliance niche.
- Beyond Germany. If German e-invoicing rules aren’t your concern at all, Sufio is a strong general-purpose invoicing app.
Known user complaints, for completeness: VAT-ID validation gaps before order placement, no search by order or invoice number, and the credit-note gating discussed above.

FAQ
Is Faktwise a full replacement for Sufio?
For German/EU compliance-driven invoicing, yes, and it goes further (XRechnung, Leitweg-ID, GoBD archive, OSS reports). If you need Peppol delivery or Sufio’s depth of template design today, Sufio retains the edge there.
Why do credit notes matter so much?
Because under German GoBD principles you never delete or edit an issued invoice. Every refund or cancellation must be documented with a credit note. An app that gates credit notes effectively gates compliant refund handling.
Does Sufio support XRechnung?
Not directly. Sufio’s structured-delivery route is the Peppol network. German public-sector portals expect XRechnung with a Leitweg-ID, which Faktwise generates and validates natively.
Can I try both?
Yes. Sufio offers a 14-day trial (no free tier); Faktwise offers a 14-day trial plus a permanent free tier of 5 invoices/month, so you can run it on real orders before paying anything.
If German and EU e-invoicing compliance is what brought you here, Faktwise was built for exactly that: automatic, validator-checked invoices and e-invoices from your Shopify orders, credit notes included on every plan, and a flat €19/month no matter how much you grow. Install it free and see how it handles your next five orders.
